The Institute of Informatics and Remote Sensing was founded in December 1987.
The Institute has a laboratory of Information Technology and Geoinformatics Laboratory.

The number of employees is about 40, including one Doctor of Sciences, 5 Ph.D, 7 M.Sc. and other scientific staff.

The scientific researchers who works in the electronics, software technology and geoinformatics field have been trained at different scientific centres in the USA, Japan, the Netherlands, Thailand, India and Russia.

Currently, the Institute provides Internet services to the institutions of the Mongolian Academy of Sciences and distributes processed satellite images for different organizations.
